He was born on April 23, 1961, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and began his wrestling career in 1979.

Gordy was part of the tag team known as The Fabulous Freebirds, alongside Michael Hayes and Buddy Roberts. The group was known for their innovative and rule-breaking wrestling style, as well as their rock and roll-inspired personas. The Fabulous Freebirds achieved great success in WCCW and later in other promotions, becoming one of the most iconic tag teams in wrestling history.
